CONSOLE COWBOY
"A year here and he still dreamed of cyberspace, hope fading nightly.”
— William Gibson, Neuromancer
CONSOLE COWBOY is a hypnotic collection of Post-Photography cowboys created using artificial intelligence assistance and digital post-processing techniques.
Derived from William Gibson's seminal cyberpunk novel 'Neuromancer,' the term (Console Cowboy) represents futuristic computer hackers that traverse Cyberspace via neural input hardware and applications. Inside this electric space, a duality of existence is formed as these 'cowboys' shed the confines of their physical selves and manifest a newly formed digital identity, mirroring the Wild West ideology of renegades embracing a new frontier.
For context, a computer "hack" often entails finding creative solutions or exploiting vulnerabilities to achieve a desired outcome. While the artist does not engage in hacking activities, the concept is indirectly referenced by manipulating text via an AI image processor to achieve a targeted result. The imagery originates from the artist's imagination and is inputted into a text field as an engineered prompt. In a sense, these prompts serve as textual sculptures, drawing from a vast database to generate entirely novel images. This collaborative interplay between human creativity and computational power evolves dynamically until the desired image is realized.
Aiming to capture their enigmatic aura, the imagery showcases solitary cowboys mounted on horses, or standing stoically as they focus their gaze directly at the viewer or distant landscapes out of frame. Mirroring the Wild West ideology of renegades embracing a new frontier, a dual nature of being is formed inside this electric space as the 'cowboys' shed the confines of their physical selves and manifest a newly formed digital identity.
Each cowboy was manifested via text and image data inputs with additional animation, texturing, coloring, etc. finished in post with the montage of still and animated elements showcasing the concept of organic user information represented by fluid frequency distortion flowing from the main subject as a connective tissue.
The compositions attempt to provoke a sense of uncanniness, challenging viewers to confront their understanding of consciousness and the concept of a soul in the context of the iconic cowboy figure as a purely digital manifestation who is nonexistent in the material world.
Moreover, the CONSOLE COWBOY collection delves into the concept of duality, exemplified by the inverted manifestation of human imagery. Unlike traditional photography where images are captured and then digitized, CONSOLE COWBOYS are born within the digital realm, highlighting the multifaceted nature of identity within and beyond cyberspace.
In 1878, Eadweard Muybridge's groundbreaking film 'The Horse in Motion' marked a pivotal moment in the history of art and science, capturing the essence of equine motion through a series of meticulously sequenced photographs. This pioneering work revealed the hidden intricacies of a horse's stride and, blurred the lines between art and scientific inquiry.
Today we find ourselves amid a digital revolution. In this age of artificial intelligence and computer-generated realities, 'RUNNING HORSE' embraces the legacy of Muybridge's pioneering spirit and continues his exploration of motion as a contemporary twist.
In an homage to Muybridge's iconic masterpiece and a thematic extension of the CONSOLE COWBOY motif, this work utilizes the power of artificial intelligence to breathe life into a synthetic steed. In this digital realm, pixels replace film, and algorithms stand in for the camera's lens. 'RUNNING HORSE' features a majestic horse in perpetual motion as a testament to the boundless possibilities AI offers.
'RUNNING HORSE' serves as a link between past and present, seamlessly blending art and technology. Furthermore, just as Muybridge's original work redefined the fundamental understanding of motion in his time, this AI-generated work reimagines the boundaries of creativity and innovation in our modern era showcasing the enduring fascination with movement and the ever-evolving tools we employ to capture its essence.
COWBOY NETWORK explores the symbiotic relationship between Andy Warhol's repetitive Pop Art and the formulaic world of Westerns in cinema, with a special focus on the emergence of digital art as a cultural outcome.
Andy Warhol, an iconic figure in the Pop Art movement, challenged artistic conventions through his use of repetition, particularly via silkscreen printing. His art featured everyday objects, like soup cans and celebrities like Marilyn Monroe and Elvis Presley, undermining traditional notions of artistic uniqueness and revealing the consumer-driven nature of American society.
Simultaneously, Western cinema adhered to structured narratives during the mid-20th century, embracing the archetypal elements of cowboys, shootouts, and vast landscapes. This formulaic approach made Westerns instantly recognizable and popular, reflecting frontier life, justice, and cultural clashes in the American West.
COWBOY NETWORK aims to depict these parallel narratives as cultural and artistic statements, focusing on digital art's evolution and, in parallel, the idea of artificial intelligence through the dissemination of data-driven information to express emotion. Warhol's repetition challenges the concept of artistic individuality, while Westerns serve as a mirror to cultural values. Both provide profound insights into society's dynamics, encouraging us to view the world through a digital lens. In bridging these worlds, this work and other pieces in the CONSOLE COWBOY collection contributes to the ongoing dialogue about art, culture, and their evolving relationship in the digital age of society.
Our connection to the natural world has profoundly transformed our modern society. The once-familiar sounds of freshwater streams, birdsong, and wind rustling through trees have given way to the monotonous hum of servers in temperature-controlled environments and the ceaseless growl of automobiles as we wait for traffic lights to change.
The organic disorder of nature has been supplanted by meticulously segmented schedules on digital calendar apps and the endless scroll through user interface grids brimming with distractions.
The era of the 'Wild West' is renowned for its pioneering spirit, cowboys, and outlaws, gold rushes, and the lawlessness that defined its time. Yet, it was also an era untouched by the internet, television, or radio. Cowboys riding through endless plains would pause by pristine streams to quench their horses' thirst. The night sky, devoid of airplanes, offered nothing but stars, visible through the crystal-clear air.
NEON PLAIN, a work depicted in CONSOLE COWBOY collection is intended to be a meditative experience via hypnotic digital film loop that seeks to encapsulate those moments of profound pause and introspection in an attempt to capture the interludes between audacious acts and lawless deeds.
Though the composition is a fusion of data, the representation of a silhouetted cowboy astride a horse symbolizes the enduring icon of myth and legend. The work also represents a bygone era that we can now recreate through the digital resurrection of memories, aided by artificial intelligence reminding us of the enduring human need for moments of reflection amidst the relentless march of progress.
COWBOY is a poignant experimental short film delving into the memories of an elderly cowboy. The narrative unfolds through the lens of the protagonist, capturing his emotional journey as he concentrates on short vignettes of memories composed as a visual layer reminiscent of a television screen. The audience witnesses both the captivating imagery and the profound impact it has on the man's expressions, creating a compelling exploration of memory and emotion within the context of the film.
For context, artificial intelligence represents a convergence of human memories, now digitized and malleable like digital clay, sculpted with the assistance of AI programs - ORAM (Organic Random Access Memories). This fusion of human experience and technological advancement encapsulates a profound duality in our existence: the capacity to create a creator. This proposition delves into the intricate interplay between human agency and technological innovation, weaving together philosophical contemplations with technological dimensions.
At its essence, this idea underscores the multifaceted nature of human existence. It extends beyond conventional artistic expressions to encompass the inception of entities or systems endowed with creative capabilities of their own. This introduces a compelling dynamic wherein our creations, such as artificial intelligence, become creators themselves, challenging traditional boundaries between creator and creation.
From a philosophical standpoint, this concept prompts inquiries into the essence of creativity, consciousness, and the ethical implications of granting autonomy to creations. It raises questions about the ethical responsibilities tied to creating entities capable of independent thought and creative expression. Moreover, it invites contemplation of the implications for our understanding of consciousness and intentionality in both human and artificial entities. The act of creating a creator initiates a recursive loop, urging us to reassess our position in the fabric of existence and the evolving relationship between the created and the creators.
In the realm of technology, this idea reflects the transformative impact of human ingenuity on artificial intelligence and machine learning. The ability to develop systems exhibiting creative prowess signals a paradigm shift in our conception of technology. This fusion of human creativity and artificial ingenuity highlights the evolving nature of our relationship with technology, stimulating discussions on the ethical deployment of AI and the potential societal ramifications of machines with creative capabilities.
